Traveller declaration

The new guide for the South African Traveller Management System was published. The guide includes provision for the submission of an online declaration. The new system allows travellers, including South African citizens and residents, leaving or entering South Africa by air to complete and submit an online traveller declaration and receive electronic confirmation thereof before they travel.

SARS have updated the current manual Traveller Declaration System to an electronic system. The new online Traveller Declaration System will be introduced at all South African international airports, commencing with King Shaka International Airport on the 29th of November 2022.

The traveller declaration is a customs tool regarding the declaration of goods and currencies which can be done on SARS mobi app pre travel or manually by form submission at the airport.

All travellers exiting the Republic need to input the following information – travel dates, contact details, details of travel companion, passport information, currency of destination where you are travelling to (if outbound), currency that you are travelling with, source of currency, details of goods you are travelling with, and entity details for business travel.

  • Travellers will then be directed to Green or Red Customs stand at airport depending on what was declared.
  • This does not impact on VAT claims or duty-free allowances.
  • This is simply an automation of the manual process that already exists.

Travellers who are travelling with children or infants will also need to complete a declaration for them.

Once you have completed the South African Traveller Declaration, a confirmation of your declaration will be emailed to you. It will contain instructions of what you need to do at the airport.

If you need assistance with completing the declaration, you may send an email to travellerescalations@sars.gov.za.
